Sound Importance: Being out in nature is one of the best ways to reduce stress levels. A team from the Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) has identified how the gentle burbling of a brook or the sound of the wind in the trees helps us relax — which could have a particularly positive impact on people carrying high levels of stress. Essentially, BSMS's researched showed that nature could be used to hack your parasympathetic nervous system. KEY! Because hacking your parasympathetic nervous system is one of the most powerful weapons against stress: aside from exposure to nature, the best way to kick-start that rest-and-digest mode is to take conscious control of your breathing, with a particular focus on lengthening exhalation.
